DialIdol Support for Skype

Skype is software that allows you to use your computer to make phone calls over the Internet without a landline or cell phone - you need nothing more that a computer with Internet access and Skype installed on that computer.

Begining with version 3.5, DialIdol will support the use of Skype to make phone calls. Using DialIdol with Skype eliminates the need for a physical modem of any type at all and makes it possible for everyone who runs a modern Windows operating system (2000/XP/Vista) to use DialIdol so long as they have an Internet connection.

Skype is NOT free and Skype may charge you to make phone calls - even those placed with DialIdol - only you can know if Skype will charge you money to place calls and if the calls placed with DialIdol will cost money! Be sure to check with Skype before placing calls with DialIdol & Skype.

DialIdol.com does not charge any money at all to use DialIdol - even with Skype.

DialIdol support for Skype in release v3.5 is considered beta even though the v3.5 release of DialIdol is considered official.

Known considerations about using Skype with DialIdol:

  • Skype must be installed on your computer for DialIdol to use Skype. DialIdol actually talks to the Skype application and will tell it to dial so not only will Skype be installed on your machine but it will be open, logged on and dialing side-by-side with DialIdol.
  • Skype is not very good at returning busy signal statuses to DialIdol so DialIdol detects complete calls in addition to busy signals with Skype. In instances where Skype does not return a busy signal notification to DialIdol, DialIdol times out and assumes the call was a busy signal.
  • As of this writing on 2/17/2008, Skype does not seem to allow calls placed to 1-866-4365701 through 1-866-4365710 to be dialed with Skype. These calls will result in errors for both Skype and DialIdol. DialIdol cannot fix this - please contact Skype to allow Skype to vote for contestants 1-10. Skype does seem to allow 1-866-4365710 - 12 to be placed.
    • This is still an issue after the first vote on 2/20/2008.
    • Skype has responded to a technical support question stating more or less that this is by design.
  • It is possible that Skype may route your call through a network that isn't in your timezone which may prohibit you from actually being able to vote when you think you should be voting. This has nothing to do with DialIdol so contact Skype for more details.
