Everything italicized in this post is the full quote from Jennifer Sprague, a spokewoman for FOX. The quote was provided to me by John Campanelli the reporter for The Plain Dealer that did the story. I bolded one part of the quote that was also particularly interesting.
Using a modem dialer is not the same as "power dialing." A person manually using a redial button on a standard telephone can generate as many call attempts as a modem dialer.
Since the inception of the contest, the producers of "American Idol" and the Fox Broadcasting Company have gone to great lengths - conceptually and technologically - to ensure the fairness of the competition. Should some unscrupulous individuals attempt to influence the outcome of the event by producing significant blocks of votes via "power-dialing" - using technical enhancements beyond what is humanly possible using a standard telephone, we have the ability to identify and remove those votes. To date, that has not been necessary as their votes have had no impact on the outcome of the competition.

From what I've pieced together a power dialer is a telemarketing type of device that is capable of placing thousands of phone calls and somehow able to cast more than one vote per call.

| It's like when a telemarketer calls you but no one answers - He made 2 or three calls, increasing his probablility that somone will answer. He's not there because the the first call was already picked up - that's my guess as to what power dialing is... |

Maybe she wants to minimize the impact and value of admitting Fox can't do anything about Dialidol's methods of voting. It's not good PR if they admit it.

oh they can do something about it... they can limit it to x votes per phone #... but that's not the goal.. the goal is to eliminate methods of casting a million votes, not a thousand or less

Well, it is set by default to 10 seconds before hangup with 3 inbetween. So 4 or 5 :D |

There's nothing to admit. A single DialIdol user generates fewer calls than a determined person dialing manually. DialIdol is not a power voting tool, and neither Fox nor the show's producers have any reason to "oppose" it.
